If someone reacts badly because their pride is hurt, this is a fit of pique.
I don't know the truth behind this story, (or this story) but I suspect that "fit of pique" accurately describes the response from the boys involved here.
In any case... as I read on another web log about this article "He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him takes care to chastise him."
